Feather River Walk-and-Wade, & Float Guided Fly Fishing Trips
Wade or float into the remote waters of the Feather River—chasing wild trout, epic hatches, and unforgettable days with Taco Fly Co. in the Sierra Nevada canyons.
The Feather River offers some of the best walk-and-wade fly fishing in Northern California. We guide a remote and scenic stretch that starts near Clio and Graeagle, flows through the rugged canyon, and ends just below Cresta Dam. You’ll be surrounded by granite walls, pine forest, and cold clear water filled with eager wild trout. This fishery has strong hatches and big grabs, especially during the spring and fall. With easy access from the road and plenty of riffles and runs to cover, this trip is perfect for anglers of all levels.
We usually float the upper section in April on our NRS Otter Dodger XL. Spring hatches and hungry wild trout around every corner. Those trips are special.

Walk Into Wild Water on the Feather
Book
Lace up your boots and step into one of Northern California’s most scenic and under-the-radar fly fishing gems: the Feather River. This trip covers the stretch from Clio and Graeagle down through the canyon to just below Cresta Dam — an epic zone filled with riffles, runs, pools, and wild trout. Unlike float trips, this walk-and-wade adventure gets you up close with the water, where stealth, technique, and a good pair of wading boots are your best tools.
Expect grabby fish, dry fly action, and breathtaking views through granite gorges and lush forested banks. Whether you’re chasing trout in the early spring or hunting hatches in the fall, the Feather delivers. All trips include drinks, flies, rods, and reels — and yes, a few laughs along the way. Full-day and half-day options available. Need lodging tips in Graeagle or Quincy? We’ve got you. Hit the water with TFC and rediscover what walk-and-wade was meant to be.
excellent wild rainbow trout
Historically, the Feather River basin was initially inhabited by the Maidu tribe, although there is evidence to suggest that the Paiute and Washoe tribes had settlements in the area before being driven out by white settlers.
This is a freestone river so there is no dam to control the amount of water above Quincy. Some years, the water can maintain proper height and temperatures to fish into July. This is all dependent on the snowpack. We stop fishing this water shed when the water temps get to be around 65-67 degrees in the day(usually mid June) to leave the trout alone until the temps start to cool back down in mid September.
Walk and wade trips consist of hiking on the river banks to find runs that hold fish. Waders and wading boots are suggested for most of the year but once the water gets warm enough, wet wading can be had.
